Vienna has put the finishing touches to its transport plans for UEFA EURO 2008™ with visitors being urged to take full advantage of local public transport.

Special arrangements
Transport councilor Rudolf Schicker, city transport chief Josef Binder and Michael Lichtenegger of local transport operator Wiener Lienen jointly unveiled the final draft of their plan for the tournament. They are expecting an additional 500,000 guests to use the transport network on top of the 2.2m who use it every working day and have made special arrangements to ensure smooth operation.

Opening hours
Capacity on underground lines will be increased by 25 per cent throughout the day and by as much as 50 per cent on evenings to deal with the increased football-related traffic. Local transport services will operate until 1.30 in the morning throughout the tournament, with Viennese authorities hoping fans will put their faith in public transport during the finals.

Car parking
Vienna wants to keep road traffic at a minimum for the finals, and has set up a number of free parking areas at the edge of the city, close to local train and underground stations, to encourage fans to leave their vehicles outside Vienna, although a clear signposting system has been set up to enable visiting drivers to find their way around the city streets.

EURO Companions
Visiting fans can pick up a leaflet entitled Traffic & Service which provides details of the transport options available in the city, with 100,000 having been printed. In addition, so-called EURO Companions – Vienna transport staff who can speak foreign languages – will be on hand to provide guests with information about train, underground and bus services in the Austrian capital.

Fan zone work in progress in Zurich

Work has started on constructing the official 45,000-capacity UEFA EURO 2008™ fan zone in Zurich with three screens being erected to show matches.

Floating platform
The fan zone will offer public viewing facilities as well as a full culinary and cultural programme during the finals, with one of the highlights set to be the 1,600 metre squared platform which will house one of the giant screens on Lake Zurich itself. The 30-tonne screen will be one of the great engineering feats of the finals, floating 12 metres above the surface of the lake at its highest point.

Fans flock to EURO 2008 Experience Tour

UEFA commercial director Philippe Margraff declared the Geneva leg of the EURO Experience Tour a success after more than 5,000 people visited the exhibition during its three-day stay in the Swiss city.

Tickets up for grabs
Four hundred school children in the Geneva area attended the event where they were able to watch a film of the competition's 48-year history, have their photo taken alongside the Henri Delaunay trophy, enjoy the interactive multimedia zone and win tickets in a quiz for one of the group games to be played in Geneva.

'Exceptional tournament'
"Through the EURO Experience Tour we hope to give a flavour of the party that awaits us at UEFA EURO 2008™ and a taste of more than 40 years of history of this exceptional tournament," Margraff said. "The impressive images on the big screen and the presence of the Henri Delaunay trophy create an atmosphere charged with emotion and not only for football fans."

Zurich next
The EURO Experience Tour is free and takes place in the world's biggest inflatable tour tent, which contains a 140-seat cinema. Geneva was the second stop on the tour after Basel, where 10,000 people attended the event two weeks ago and where UEFA EURO 2008™ kicks off on 7 June. The EURO Experience Tour will visit a number of locations in Austria and Switzerland, co-hosts for this summer's tournament, including all eight host cities. The next stop is Zurich from 21 February.

Artistic programme Present by Geneva for Euro 2008

With 32 days remaining before the start of UEFA EURO 2008™ Geneva state councillor Mark Müller unveiled the city's artistic programme, including no less than 800 artists.

'Rich programme'
The events, planned for 6-29 June in the French-speaking city, will contain more than 800 performing artists, including 72 concerts and 24 evening DJs. "For two years, we have repeatedly said the EURO will be more than just three football games in Geneva," stated Müller. "And the rich programme we revealed today is proof of what we said."

Three venues
Street theatre and other performances will also take place in the city during the EURO. The shows will be staged at three strategic places, the Plaine de Plainpalais, the Bout-du-Monde stadium and in the Vernets ice rink.

International flavour
Many famous international artists will perform as well, such Yannick Noah, Kassav' and Cesaria Evora. But Swiss productions are also planned with Moonraisers, Kid Chocolat or the local singers from Beau Lac de Bâle helping excite the public. Organisers are expecting many celebrations in Geneva with the FanZone, FanVillage and FanClub08 all full.

Photographer’s naked ambition comes to Euro 2008

Renowned photographer Spencer Tunick has set his sights on bringing his unique style to Euro2008. For those who have thus far avoided Tunick’s work (and frankly if you have you must have been living in a hole for the last few years), this is the guy that gathers lots of people together and take photographs of them. Naked. The people, not him. That would be weird.

To elucidate, Tunick has requested that at least 2008 willing volunteers (see what he’s done there) congregate in the Ernst Happel Stadium on 11th May to form another of his naked canvasses. Unfortunately, this date does not coincide with any of the tournament games (imagine how much attention would be paid to the on field action if there was a section of the crowd made up of 2000 naked people), but will nevertheless form part of the ‘cultural’ aspect of the competition.

With the Austrian National railway offering free travel to the first 2008 men and women to sign up, there really seems no reason not to be a part of it. If you live in Vienna. And like taking your clothes off. And don’t mind being photographed in the buff. We’ll even give you the link to where you can sign up.

Euro 2008: Tosca and football on Lake Constance

Visitors will experience a unique EURO atmosphere in the fane zone around Lake Constance, against the opera backdrop of Tosca on Bregenz lakeside stage.

Measures have been put in place by officials in Vienna to offer additional medical care for football fans during the EURO.

At Stadionbad near Ernst Happel Stadium extra medical services with emergency doctors and paramedics will be provided on at least 400 m2 (4,305 square feet).

150 paramedics and 20 emergency doctors
The medical facility can take in 60 patients. Even minor surgical procedures can be carried out here. An additional emergency unit can treat 50 patients in one hour. The unit may be enlarged any time if needed. On match days some 150 paramedics and 20 doctors will be on duty for any kind of mishap.

Apart from providing additional medical services the Vienna Municipality will also be represented by the Fire Brigade (MA 68), the Health Service (MA 15), the Vienna Public Transportation Services and the Police at Stadionbad during the EURO.
